Bearded Dragon habitat questions?
I want to get a bearded dragon but I keep getting different advice on what I should and shouldn’t get for it.
I wish to turn a 55 gallon aquarium in to a habitat for a young bearded dragon. What size dome lights, how many and what wattage would you recommend? Should one be a strip light and if so what type of bulb and wattage should I use? Any brand better that the other? I am going to use the reptile carpet they sale at pet stores for the substrate until the bearded dragon is older. I have the food and water dishes already, so that I wont need to worry about. Also what style thermometers and hydrometers would you recommend? And how many would I need for the 55 gallon? Would you recommend a heating pad or not? Is there anything else I forgot to add? Any advice or suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Also, since my 55 gallon was once a fish aquarium, (cleaned out very well) could I use the two strip lamps? Or would you recommend buying another one?
To start off, you might want to block off about half of the tank if you’re getting a really young beardie (like 6-12 inches) until he’s older. You want a porcelain dome light big enough to fit a hot enough bulb (gotta get the basking spot to 110 degrees F for young ‘uns), I’d guess around 75 watts. Definitely get a strip light with some kind of UVB bulb in it; most people like ReptiSun 5.0 or 10.0. And I’d say use just one strip light since that’s all they really need.
Be sure if you’re using repti carpet that it’s the “grassy” kind and not the ones with loops that their toes tend to get tangled in!
For thermometers, get some with a wire and a probe (like the ones they use for aquariums, not the stick-on): one probe on the basking spot and on on the cool side. Or if you’re willing to invest, get a TempGun; they’re fast and accurate! No real need for hydrometers unless your house gets really humid.
Avoid heat pads if at all possible! Pads, heat rocks, and under-tank heaters tend to cause burns for beardies because they can’t feel heat on their bellies.
