In an effort to make our world better for ourselves and our pets, NEOPOA has a number of ongoing projects, and to highlight them on occasion we decided to bring one to the forefront each month as a "project of the month". It might be something as simple as showing how we've helped a member with this or that, or may be something as complex as a fundraising project for this or that. This month's Project of the Month is:

NEOPOA's Property Acquisition and Management Fund

How many people do you know that had trouble finding a pet-friendly place to live when compelled to move to a new area? Quite a few, we'd figure. The NUMBER ONE cause of shelter surrender of animals is that the family is moving and the new place doesn't allow pets. This is becoming more and more of a problem as building owners and management companies become increasingly concerned about liability issues, especially with larger dogs. Many others just feel it isn't worth the hassle, or charge their tenants exorbitant "pet rent" rates in addition to their typical, often overpriced, rental rates. We at NEOPOA hope to turn this around, so we started the Property Acquisition and Maintenance Fund to purchase not only properties for NEOPOA shelters, structures and usage, but to purchase real estate to be used as pet-friendly rental properties. Multi-unit buildings, single-family homes, duplexes.... all are appropriate places for a family to dwell with their preferred kind of pet, but like a broken record, these things cost money. We hope to raise $160,000.00 - 200,000.00 in the short term to start bringing about these changes with the purchase of a couple properties to start adding to the pet-friendly housing shift.
