Birds and reptiles same biological class?
Ok i had heard that Birds and Reptiles were in the same biological class since they’re so closely related but i went on wikipedia and it had it as two seperate classes
By all taxonomic rights, birds and reptiles should be the same biological class. The only problem is that 1. People don’t adjust well to huge changes like “birds are reptiles,” but moreover 2. Ornithologists and herpetologists don’t like the idea. It is uncomfortable for the sanctity of your class of study to be violated by taxonomists (who are already the nerdy jerks of the science world… always changing names on us!)
First, study this diagram of major phylogenetic groupings.

It isn’t a matter of “birds evolved from reptiles therefore they’re reptiles? Then mammals are reptiles too! Why don’t we all just call ourselves bacteria, then?!”
Nooo no no. Whooah nelly. Calm down. Lets walk through the phylogenetic chart, here. The bottom of the chart show our common ancestors. The words beneath the diagram, where branches fork off, describe traits common to EVERY species above that branching. Look at the bottom, to the first split off. It says “Vertebrata”. Vertebrates. Everything above that split has a backbone. Pices, fish, split off at that point. Fish have backbones, amphibians have backbones, mammals, turtles, etc. They all have backbones! So they are all called “Vertebrates.”
Next rung on the ladder, “Tetrapoda.” Tetrapods. Four legs. Everything above that point has four legs! Fish don’t, they split off before Tetrapoda, fish may have more than 4 fins. But amphibians, mammals, turtles, crocodiles? They all have four legs! (there are some legless lizards, amphibians, and snakes. They evolved to have no legs later on from creatures that did have four legs) So everything from that point on IS a tetrapod! You are a tetrapod, too!
Next rung, Amniota. Amniotic sacs. We all have amniotic sacs, mammals, turtles, birds, etc (reptile and bird eggs contain amniotic sacs, it’s not just a mammal thing!) so everything above that point is an amniot, while everything below is not. Fish and amphibians don’t have amniotic sacs.
Next… REPTILIA! The reptiles! Everything above that rung is a reptile, Testudines (turtles), Lepidosaurs (snakes and lizards), Crocodylia (crocodiles, alligators), and Aves (Bird—— WAITAMINUTE!! Birds aren’t reptiles!! But… wait… they ARE Vertibrates, they ARE tetrapods (two feet, two wings–modified feet), they ARE amniots…. As it happens they are even Diapsids and Archosaurs…. so why is it they aren’t reptiles?
Basically, birds are being cheated.
Actually, all of Reptilia is being cheated, isn’t it? From the looks of it, while Fish, Amphibians, Mammals, and Birds get their own taxonomic class, Testudines, Crocodyles, and Lepidosaurs are all lumped into one! Birds are no less related to lizards than turtles are! They should really ALL have their own distinct grouping.
In a human perspective, it’s as though you’re all invited to a family reunion, you, your sisters, your parents, your cousins, your second cousins, third cousins… everyone except your weird aunt Sally who is ginger, and no one else in the family is ginger, so… you sort of don’t talk to her. That is basically what happened to birds. They happen to have feathers and warm blood, and they’re booted out of the taxonomic tree! Having a shell and leathery skin doesn’t make turtles taxonomically distinct from a snake that has no eyelids, large scales, and no legs? It’s just this feather hang-up. From the human standpoint, we find the differences between birds and lizards more noticeable than the differences between turtles, lizards, and crocodiles. It doesn’t mean turtles, lizards, and crocodiles aren’t very different from each other, or that birds don’t have alot in common with them.
At the end of the day, the argument is this: If birds are considered part of Vertebrata,Tetrapoda, and Amniota, and are above the taxonomic splitting off of Reptilia, then they cannot be excluded from Reptilia. And that’s the taxonomic truth.
